I recently silkscreened the Carl Sagan space anomaly print on t-shirts as well.
The film for this design was created by hand with india ink, as a negative.

The Carl Sagan Foundation and I have been trying to work something out for a few months now regarding selling this shirt. Unfortunately could not come to an agreement. Here is their statement:
“The Estate of Carl Sagan has the honor and obligation to protect his name, likeness and legacy. We are unable to cede the copyright of his image to third parties, as this artist demands. To do so would be to risk its misuse at some later time. During Dr. Sagan’s lifetime he turned down all kinds of lavish offers in order to protect his reputation and scientific credibility. Those of us who knew him, love him and are entrusted with protecting the precious meaning of his life and work and refuse to enter into agreements that we know he, himself, would have rejected.”

I created this shirt for myself and a few friends as a way to remember Carl Sagan. I’m thrilled and surprised at the positive reaction this design is getting online. However, I feel morally conflicted about selling. I do love the idea of spreading Sagan awareness & awesomeness though.
I’ve contacted the Carl Sagan Foundation to see what their thoughts on the matter are, and proposed the idea of profits from the sale being donated to their cause. When I hear back from them, I’ll have a better idea of what to do next. I’ll post an update as soon as they get back to me.

I would pay money for this. I would definitely pay money for this. Also, if this were on a poster I would buy that if selling shirts wasn’t an option for you. This is an excellent design that captures Sagan’s essence quite well in my opinion. Well done.

Just as those spoke above, I love this design and would be more than willing to pay for it. Also, knowing that my money would be going to a worthy cause gives me greater desire to purchase and thus participate in this “Sagan Nation” over all. It’s uplifting to see the emotions stirred by a simple t-shirt, but it’s so much more than a t-shirt, but isn’t everything. Be checking back soon 🙂

Wow! That’s a unique design. I am obsessive in choosing t-shirt from my world, Science and my concern, environmental problems. This t-shirt is a respect to Sagan as a teacher, when i teach physics and Astronomy. Wish to have one or more of this.
Absolutely beautiful design. Boggles my mind how this could be singled out by his estate, and yet there are countless shirts and other items out there on sites like Redbubble and Zazzle that continue to be sold. If they were smart, they’d sanction this as something that truly honors his legacy, and use the proceeds to further awareness of the importance of science in schools.
